Former President Mohamed Nasheed has departed for India to participate in a conference focused on the security and stability of the Indian Ocean.
The 10th Indian Ocean Dialogue (IOD), scheduled to take place in the capital, New Delhi, tomorrow and the following day, will address regional security issues and their impact on the island nations of the Indian Ocean.
In a video interview prior to his departure, Nasheed—who is currently contesting for the position of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson—remarked that no Maldivian political campaign is complete without visiting neighboring Sri Lanka and India.
"Regardless, I believe it is essential for the Maldives to be represented in these ongoing discussions regarding the Indian Ocean," Nasheed stated.
Nasheed further noted that he intends to speak on matters concerning the safety and security of the Maldivian people during the conference.
The former president is expected to return to the Maldives on Saturday.
In the race for the MDP chairmanship, Nasheed is competing against Galolhu South MP Meekail Naseem, and Ibrahim Mohamed (Vaadu) from Laamu Fonadhoo.
