Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Abdulla Muththalib has announced that a technical team will arrive in the Maldives this month to commence the survey and design phase of the Male’ roads redevelopment project.
During today’s People’s Majlis sitting, Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) raised questions regarding the project's progress and the reasons for its delay. In response, Muththalib explained that the timeline is influenced by the procedural requirements associated with it being a grant-funded initiative.
“The feasibility study has been completed, and the tendering process to select a party for the survey and design phase has now concluded. The designated team will arrive in the Maldives within this month to begin the survey and design work,” he said.
He further clarified that once the design phase is complete, the Chinese government will initiate the process of selecting a construction company. Physical works on the roads will commence immediately following the appointment of a contractor.
“The project is proceeding as announced by the President, following the schedule established by the Chinese government. Furthermore, this is not solely related to Chinese grant aid,” Muththalib added.
Residents of Male’ continue to face challenges due to repeated flooding and the deteriorating condition of the city's long-neglected streets. The government previously disclosed that the comprehensive redevelopment project is estimated to cost over USD100 million.
President Mohamed Muizzu first announced that the project would be carried out through a grant from China during the 2024 parliamentary election campaign.
A technical team previously visited the Maldives in November 2024 to conduct the initial feasibility study for the project. The government confirmed that the study was successfully concluded within that same month.
