President Mohamed Muizzu stated today that the government was compelled to disclose the private details of an 18-year-old who died in the Maldives National University (MNU) hostel after struggling with mental health issues.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office, Muizzu acknowledged that he personally believes it was inappropriate to publicize the private details of the student who passed away at the MNU accommodation block.
However, he explained that the disclosure became necessary after serious allegations were leveled against the police officers who had interacted with the student prior to the incident.
"In the cases mentioned, we reached a point of necessity where some information had to be shared. But even then, it is not the ideal approach. We must find a way to avoid such disclosures entirely," Muizzu said.
The President reiterated that the decision to release the deceased youth's personal information was driven by the weight of public scrutiny.
Muizzu further noted that had there been no such pressure from the community, there would have been no reason to reveal the victim's private details.
"I believe that if the community acts with a shared understanding and spirit, the necessity to share personal information would not arise at all," the President said.
The private details of the deceased student were initially disclosed by Home Minister Ali Ihusaan during a press conference on Thursday. During that briefing, the Minister released the entirety of the correspondence the student had sent to the Police Social Support Service.
