The government has appointed Ibrahim Aboobakuru, the former Male' City Council member for the Maafannu West constituency, to a senior position at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
After initially contesting as an independent candidate for the Maafannu West seat in the local council elections held on April 4, Ibrahim later decided to withdraw and endorse the People's National Congress (PNC) candidate, current Deputy Mayor Mohamed Areesh. However, both Ibrahim and the candidate he supported were unsuccessful in that election.
Senior PNC sources report that shortly after the election, the President's Office appointed him as the Head of Transport at IGMH. Following this appointment, Ibrahim resigned from his position as a city councilor.
"This was a reward given to him [for supporting the PNC candidate]," a senior PNC member said on condition of anonymity.
Ibrahim's appointment came to light after IGMH shared photos of a hospital event on social media yesterday.
Ibrahim was originally elected to the Male' City Council on a Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) ticket. He later defected to the PNC and briefly joined the People's National Front (PNF), the party formed by former President Abdulla Yameen in 2024.
During the council election campaign, President Mohamed Muizzu publicly thanked Ibrahim for his decision to back the PNC candidate. His resignation from the council was finalized to allow him to assume his new role at IGMH.
