The Maldives Police Service has compiled an intelligence report involving Ahmed Nazim, the Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis and a key member of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) leadership.
The development comes as Nazim was removed today from both the Parliamentary Committee on Security Services (241 Committee) and the Public Accounts Committee.
Adhadhu confirmed through two separate sources that the police have drafted an intelligence report concerning Nazim. The report includes several criminal allegations against him.
While the specific nature of the allegations remains unclear, sources indicate that the police are investigating Nazim for "serious criminal offences."
Nazim is one of the most experienced politicians currently active in the Maldives. He previously served as Deputy Speaker of the Parliament from 2009 until 2015.
Nazim was once a close ally of former President Abdulla Yameen and played a pivotal role in Yameen’s first political party, the People’s Alliance (PA).
However, following a political fallout during Yameen’s presidency, Nazim was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2015 on corruption charges. Later that year, after travelling to Singapore for medical treatment, he sought political asylum in the United Kingdom.
Nazim returned to the Maldives in 2018 after the Supreme Court overturned his conviction.
