Plans to construct a specialised hospital for women and children in Hulhumale' Phase 2 have been revised, with those services now set to be integrated as a specialised unit or department within a new multi-specialty hospital.

During a press conference yesterday, President Mohamed Muizzu announced that the government intends to build a 500-bed multi-specialty hospital in Hulhumale' Phase 2. He noted that the services for women and children, which were previously planned as a standalone facility, will now be incorporated as a specialised department within this larger hospital complex.

Muizzu stated that technical work and funding arrangements for the project are currently underway, with the government aiming to complete all preparations and commence physical works by mid-year. This hospital compound will also feature a cancer treatment facility and a radiation chamber.

"The specialised unit or department for women and children's health will be integrated into this multi-specialty hospital. Those efforts are progressing accordingly," he said.

The Health Ministry had previously announced plans to develop a women and children’s hospital on a 46,000-square-foot plot in Hulhumale' Phase 2.

Under that initial project, the facility was expected to provide essential services such as IVF treatments, maternal care, pediatric intensive care, and surgical services.

However, according to Muizzu’s remarks yesterday, all these services will now be consolidated within the 500-bed multi-specialty hospital.

As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the healthcare system in Hulhumale', Muizzu also mentioned that a proposal has been submitted under an Indian Line of Credit (LOC) to construct an additional large building on the grounds of the existing Hulhumale' Hospital in Phase 1.
