Police arrested two individuals last Friday for attempting to smuggle over a kilogram of narcotics into the Maldives by air.
The suspects, identified as Alya Sharsa Naseer, 25, of Galolhu Muthee'ge Aa'ge, and Aminath Roona, 29, of Bijilee Ufa, Kaafu Thulusdhoo, were apprehended on suspicion of importing and trafficking illicit drugs.
Alya Sharsa Naseer was taken into custody at Velana International Airport (VIA). Meanwhile, Aminath Roona was arrested in Hulhumale’ during a joint operation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Department and Counter-Narcotics Intelligence.
The Criminal Court has ordered both suspects to be remanded in custody for 15 days as the investigation continues.
Maldives Customs Service has intercepted several large shipments of drugs attempted to be smuggled into the country via air and sea this year, handing over the cases to the police for further investigation.
