Ahmed Maimoon Mohamed, Vice President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Youth Wing, has been released by the court under specific conditions following his arrest a protest last night.

The MDP has been staging nightly protests presenting 12 demands to the government, asserting that recent council elections and referendums have demonstrated a loss of public confidence and a lack of support for the administration.

The court imposed four conditions for Maimoon’s release: cooperating with the ongoing investigation, notifying the court of any changes to his phone number, informing the court before traveling outside of Male’, and refraining from any contact with the police officer injured during last night’s protest.

Police arrested two individuals during the demonstration: Abdulla Rasheed (Vaavaa), the MDP Naifaru Constituency President, and Ahmed Maimoon Mohamed. Rasheed was released late last night without being produced before a court.

Both individuals sustained various injuries during their arrest. Maimoon, who suffered injuries to his head and body, received medical treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital last night.

During Saturday’s protest, police also obstructed media personnel. Members of former President Abdulla Yameen’s party, the People’s National Front (PNF), joined the MDP demonstration as well.

The MDP has presented a list of 12 demands to the government; however, the administration has yet to respond.
