Voting has commenced today for the second round of the Local Council and Women's Development Committee (WDC) elections.
The second round, which began at 8:00 am and will continue until 4:00 pm, aims to elect two councillors, a WDC president, and two WDC members.
The constituencies participating in this second round are:
- Baa hDonfanu Councillor (Seat reserved for women)
- Fuvahmulah Dhandimagu Constituency Councillor (Seat reserved for women)
- Haa Alif Kelaa WDC President
- Haa Dhaal Neykurendhoo WDC Member
- Laamu Maavah WDC Member
Candidates from the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) are contesting in all five constituencies. The remaining contenders include three candidates from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and two independent candidates.
In the first round of the council elections, the ruling PNC suffered a defeat against the opposition MDP. The MDP secured the mayoral seats in all cities and won the majority of the total council seats.
