A Maldivian man reported missing after the Udhares boat ran aground and sank near Laamu Olhuveli has been found alive.
The vessel was en route from Male' to Gaaf Alif Villingili when the incident occurred.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) confirmed that Ismail Afeef was located during a search and rescue operation. According to the MNDF, he was found alive and has been transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
Search underway for missing Maldivian after boat runs aground
Authorities are searching for a missing Maldivian man after the boat "Udhares" ran aground on a reef near Laamu Olhuveli. While 12 other passengers were rescued or reached safety, one man remains unaccounted for as the vessel sinks. Police have warned nearby vessels to be cautious of drifting cargo in the area.
Authorities received reports of the incident at approximately 1:25 am. There were a total of 13 people on board the vessel at the time of the accident.
Police reported that one expatriate managed to swim to the shore of Olhuveli, while 11 others were rescued by a boat from the nearby resort.
The rescued group consists of two Maldivians and nine expatriates. Police confirmed that all 11 individuals are in good health.
Following the sinking of the vessel, a large amount of cargo is drifting west of Olhuveli. Police have urged all vessels navigating the area to exercise extreme caution.
