The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has asked the Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla to resolve the issue of ministers failing to appear for questioning sessions.

The MDP said 62 questions posed by MPs remain unanswered since December 2024.

According to the parliament rules, ministers must respond to questions within 14 days of the notice.

The complaint, signed by MDP Parliamentary Group Secretary General and Galolhu North MP Ibrahim Mohamed, said the government's refusal to be answerable to the parliament is an obstacle to the democratic system.

The opposition described the move as unconstitutional, saying the government is deliberately obstructing parliament's powers to ensure accountability of the executive branch.

Cabinet ministers who do not answer questions from parliament include senior government officials. They include Finance Minister Moosa Zameer, Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon and Housing Minister Abdullah Muththalib.

The complaint also names Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, Attorney General (AG) Ahmed Usham and Heritage Minister Adam Naseer Ibrahim.

The ministers were asked about important issues related to development projects, state finances and national security.
