Male': Bangladesh lifted their second SAFF U-20 Championship title after defeating India 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a goalless final at the National Football Stadium on Friday.
After 90 minutes of disciplined and cautious football from both sides, the final was decided from the spot, where Bangladesh showed greater composure under pressure to reclaim the regional title.
The shootout remained tense throughout. India converted through Md Arbash, Samson Ahongshangbam and Vishal Yadav, but Rishi Singh Ningthoukhongjam’s effort was saved while Omang Dodum sent his penalty over the crossbar.
Bangladesh responded with successful strikes from Md Mursed Ali, Chandon Roy and Md Yousuf Ali. Although Samuel Raksam struck the crossbar to briefly reopen the contest, Ronan Sullivan stepped forward and calmly converted the decisive penalty to seal victory for Bangladesh.
The final itself was closely contested, with both teams placing emphasis on defensive organisation and limiting risks in possession. Clear chances were scarce during the opening half as both sides struggled to create space in dangerous areas.
Bangladesh looked to build attacks through wide areas, but India’s defence remained compact and disciplined, continuing the form that had seen them concede only once before the final.
India’s best first-half opening came in the 32nd minute when Bangladesh goalkeeper Md Ismail Hossain Mahin failed to gather a cross, but Yaipharemba Chingakham could not take advantage as his effort was blocked before reaching goal.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with midfield battles dominating possession and both sides reluctant to overcommit forward. India came close when Vishal Yadav met a deep delivery inside the box but failed to direct his effort on target under pressure.
A late opportunity arrived in the 83rd minute when substitute Rishi Singh Ningthoukhongjam delivered a low cross into the penalty area, but Vishal again narrowly missed making decisive contact.
Bangladesh nearly settled the final in stoppage time when Declan Sullivan attempted to release Ronan Sullivan behind the Indian defence, but goalkeeper Suraj Singh Aheibam reacted quickly off his line to clear the danger and force penalties.
Bangladesh’s title run caps another strong campaign after they had reached the final by defeating Nepal in the semi-finals, while India entered the decider following a dominant victory over Bhutan.
Despite India’s defeat, Omang Dodum was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and finished as joint top scorer with three goals.
For Bangladesh, the victory adds another major youth title to their growing regional success and underlines the continued rise of their emerging generation of players.
