Male' Maldives: Bangladesh opened their SAFF U-20 Championship campaign with an impressive 2–0 victory over long-time rivals Pakistan at National Football Stadium in Malé, with debutant Ronan Sullivan delivering both goals in a standout performance.
The United States-born forward, making his first appearance for Bangladesh’s U-20 side, proved decisive in the second half after a tightly contested opening period, giving the Red and Greens an ideal start in Group B and immediately drawing attention as one of the early standout players of the tournament.
Much of the pre-match focus had centered on the inclusion of the Sullivan brothers, Ronan Sullivan and Declan Sullivan, both of Bangladeshi heritage and based in the United States. While Declan remained out of the starting eleven, Ronan was handed a starting role and quickly justified the decision with a technically assured and energetic attacking display.
The opening half developed into a tactical contest, with Bangladesh controlling possession and dictating much of the tempo while Pakistan remained disciplined defensively.
Last edition of this competition runner-up, Bangladesh created early pressure, including a corner in the opening ten minutes, but lacked precision in the final third despite their territorial dominance.
Pakistan attempted to disrupt Bangladesh’s rhythm by pressing high in phases, but Bangladesh’s midfield structure gradually took control, forcing their opponents deeper and limiting attacking transitions.
Despite several promising movements and sustained possession, Bangladesh were unable to break through before halftime, and the first half ended goalless.
The breakthrough came nine minutes after the restart when Ronan Sullivan opened the scoring in the 54th minute with a composed finish, converting after Bangladesh finally turned their possession advantage into a decisive attacking moment.
That goal shifted the game firmly in Bangladesh’s favour, and they continued to attack with greater confidence. Sullivan struck again in the 67th minute, completing his brace and securing full control of the match with another well-taken finish that effectively ended Pakistan’s resistance.
Bangladesh managed the remaining stages of the game professionally, maintaining shape and limiting Pakistan’s chances of mounting a comeback, while preserving a clean sheet that added further value to the result.
The victory places Bangladesh in a strong early position in Group B, where the top two teams will advance to the semi-finals scheduled for 1 April. Bangladesh will now prepare for their final group-stage fixture against India on Saturday, following Pakistan’s upcoming meeting with India on Thursday.
