President Mohamed Muizzu on Thursday (February 5) said that neighbouring countries and Islamic countries will be given priority in shaping his foreign policy.
He made the announcement in his third presidential address delivered during the opening session of the People's Majlis.
Historically, the Maldives has maintained close ties to neighbouring India. However, recent governments have strengthened relations with China. Muizzu came to power and implemented a pro-China policy in the first few months of his government.
But China is not an Islamic country and is not a neighbour of the Maldives. It is unclear whether China was included in Muizzu's list of neighbours in building foreign relations.
Muizzu also said he will seek to explore trade and economic opportunities in strengthening foreign relations.
"We rely on exploring trade and economic opportunities and increasing cooperation with foreign partners. We rely on the noble principles of dialogue and the noble rules of diplomacy," he declared.
Muizzu and China's relationship began when the government began to maintain close relations with India during the government of former President Abdulla Yameen. Muizzu came to power with a campaign called "India Out."
In January 2024, after returning from a visit to China, Muizzu announced a roadmap for moving away from India. These include ending dependence on India for imports of food and medicines.
Since then, relations between the Maldives and India have deteriorated significantly. However, the government was forced to re-establish relations with India due to a lack of assistance from China and a slowdown in the economy.
