Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa has been elected as the interim Chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
He was elected with 65 votes out of 66 present at the party's National Council meeting on Monday night.
"I sincerely thank all the members who trusted me and voted for me. At the same time, on behalf of all, I thank former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail for his service to the party," Ghafoor said after the vote.
Ghafoor is currently the most senior member in MDP's parliamentary group. The biggest challenge facing the interim Chairperson is to unify the party as the local council elections approach.
The MDP Chairperson post became vacant following the resignation of former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail.
