Male' Maldives: The Maldives National Women’s Carrom Team has achieved a landmark milestone at the ongoing 7th Carrom World Cup 2025 in Malé, securing the silver medal and rising to World Rank No. 2, the highest accomplishment ever recorded by a Maldivian carrom team in any international tournament.
This historic result marks a new chapter for the sport in the Maldives and sets an unprecedented benchmark for future national teams.
In the Women’s Team Event final, the Maldives delivered a spirited performance against the tournament favourites, India, ultimately finishing as runners-up after a competitive and hard-fought encounter. India clinched the title with a 3–0 victory, but the Maldivian players’ determination and resilience drew praise from spectators and officials alike.
The final opened with a gripping doubles match in which India’s Mithra and Kajal Kumari defeated Aishath Nahufa and Fathimath Rayana 2–1. The Indian pair took the first set 25–8, before Nahufa and Rayana responded strongly to win the second 17–13, but Mithra and Kajal regained control to secure the decider 25–5. In the second game, India’s Khazima overcame Aminath Vidhaadh in straight sets, winning 24–8 and 25–8. The final singles match saw India’s Keerthana defeat Aishath Fainaz with a commanding performance, taking the sets 24–6 and 25–1.
The Maldives’ silver medal marks a significant improvement from the 6th Carrom World Cup held last year in California, USA, where both the men’s and women’s teams won bronze.
This year, the women’s team elevated the nation to new heights with their silver-medal finish, reinforcing their rapid progress on the global stage.
The men’s team, meanwhile, narrowly missed out on a podium finish after a closely contested bronze medal match against Bangladesh.
Hassan Nazim delivered a strong start for the Maldives, winning his singles match in straight sets. However, Bangladesh responded with a dominant doubles victory, as Anis Ahmed and Basu Das overcame Adam Adheel and Ismail Azmeen 25–9, 23–10. The deciding singles match went to three sets, where Hafizur Rahman edged past Ibrahim Hujaan Ali 20–19, 23–24, 18–13 to secure the bronze for Bangladesh.
As the 7th Carrom World Cup continues in Malé, the Maldives celebrates a historic achievement that has elevated the nation’s standing in the global carrom community. The women’s team’s silver medal not only marks a moment of national pride but also signals a promising future for Maldivian carrom on the world stage.
