The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is investigating five High Court judges and removing them from office in order to bring the judiciary under the full control of the government, former Supreme Court Justice Husnu Suood has said.
The JSC is investigating the cases of Judges Mohamed Niyaz, Mohamed Faisal, Hussain Mazeed, Fathimath Farheeza and Dheebanaz Fahmy.
The JSC did not say whether it was investigating the cases. But some of the judges have already been summoned to the JSC, while others have received the summons.
In a post on social media X, Suood expressed concern and said two civil court judges are also facing investigation.
"This is a planned attempt to take full control of the justice system. Our institutions need to get justice. The cases against those judges are baseless and politically motivated," he wrote.
Adhadhu understands that the most experienced judge of the High Court bench Mohamed Niyaz has also decided to retire. Niyaz is a member of the JSC.
Some judges are under pressure to retire while others are expected to be removed after the investigations.
Suood said the judges are being influenced through the JSC to silence the independent voices in the judiciary.
Earlier this year, JSC began investigating Suood, but he resigned from the top court bench to protest against the politically motivated case.
Justices Azmiralda Zahir and Mahaz Ali Zahir were dismissed on May 14 despite the parliament's counsel general saying the investigation was unlawful. Chief Justice Muthasim Adnan retired after that.
