Incumbent Mayor Adam Azim and former MP Ali Azim are contesting the primary for the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) mayoral candidate in next year's local council elections.
Adhadhu has learned that both Azims have already started campaigning. Adam Azim's campaign activities began last week, while Ali Azim has not yet held an official campaign event.
Adam Azim, who is also the MDP's Male' Constituency President, won the mayoral seat with 44.8 percent of the vote in January 2024.
Before becoming mayor, Azim was the Managing Director of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) during the MDP government.
Ali Azim contested and was elected on the MDP ticket in the 19th Parliament. After serving in the leadership, he was expelled from the party due to rifts within the party.
He then joined the Democrats led by former President Mohamed Nasheed. He rejoined the MDP on January 11. Many former Democrats, including Nasheed, have now rejoined the MDP.
