The local council elections will be held on March 28 and nominations will be opened on January 17, the Elections Commission (EC) has announced.
EC President Mohamed Zahid told Public Service Media (PSM) that they were working to hold the election on the scheduled date.
“As it is tentatively planned, the date of the elections is now scheduled for March 28, 2026. That is the planned date we have at the moment to hold local council elections and women development committee elections,” Zahid said.
"We planned to open for candidacy on January 17. We will hopefully be able to go on schedule," he added.
The council elections will cost at least between MVR 70 million and MVR 80 million. Steps will be taken in the future to reduce costs, he said.
