The High Court has dismissed an appeal against a 72 kg drug case after the Prosecutor General's (PG) Office failed to pay the registration fee within the deadline.
The 72 kg of drugs were smuggled into the Maldives on a fishing boat called Masjaree 2, transported to Male' on the Princess Sameera launch, and confiscated while hidden in a car. Ten people were arrested.
However, due to various issues, charges were filed against only Irufan Thagiyyu, Ahmed Naseer and Mohamed Akram. None of them was convicted during the Criminal Court trial.
High Court Registrar Mariyam Hurshida said the PG Office was informed by email to pay the registration fee on October 5, but had failed to comply.
But the PG Office Spokesperson Ahmed Shafeeu said the office had not received the High Court's email. He said the PG Office will file to review the High Court's decision.
The drugs were seized on December 8, 2020, during an operation based on police intelligence.
