There will be no presidential election in 2028 if President Mohamed Muizzu is not put on the right track, Adhaalath Party (AP) President Imran Abdullah has warned.
In a post on X, Imran called on political leaders and political parties to work together to resolve the issues created by the Muizzu administration.
He highlighted concerns related to private businesses going bankrupt, financial difficulties and the possibility of default and the destruction of the system of governance.
"This is the time for all political leaders and political parties to work together without waiting to see which party or which politician is more likely to become President in 2028 if we want to continue Aasandha medical insurance for the people, if we want uninterrupted electricity service, and if we want to ensure housing for the people," Imran stated.
After Muizzu came to power, constitutional amendments were rushed using his super majority in the parliament to gather more powers to the executive. Lawmakers have been chained to their parties because changes ensure they will lose their seats if they leave or are expelled from their parties.
The Supreme Court bench was overhauled in a short time without due process, using the politicised judicial oversight body. The court's bench is now dominated by justices appointed by Muizzu.
Since then, he has pushed through an unconstitutional legislation to limit the freedom of expression guaranteed under the constitution, with the intention to control the media and dissenting voices on social media platforms.
