Agreements have been signed with Chinese companies to implement a major renewable energy project and establish a fisheries hub in Addu.
The two agreements were among the 11 agreements signed on Tuesday to strengthen ties with China. The government did not disclose the title of all the agreements.
The power generation agreement was signed with Guosheng Energy Co., LTD. The agreement to build a maritime and fisheries logistics hub in Addu was signed with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC).
The power generation agreement was signed for the first phase to generate 150 MW of electricity.
President Mohamed Muizzu attended the signing ceremony. He is currently in China on the invitation of President Xi Jinping to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.
Earlier in January 2024, Muizzu visited China and signed multiple agreements. More agreements were signed after that, but none of the work is being carried out.
One of the previous agreements signed with China was the project for the Laamu Gaadhoo transshipment port. However, the government later signed an agreement with India to implement a similar project in Gaadhoo.
The government also signed an agreement to carry out a major agricultural project in the Uthuru Thila Falhu where India is working to establish a military port.
But the project was later moved to Fushidhiggaru lagoon. The government also signed a separate agreement with India to fully cooperate in the military port construction project.
