Police have made no progress to support allegations of a financial coup against the Bank of Maldives (BML) and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), a year after the government prompted an investigation.
The investigation was launched on August 26, 2024, following claims by the government that BML’s board had conspired with the opposition to destabilize President Mohamed Muizzu's administration.
A police spokesperson told Adhadhu they will check for updates on the investigation and has refused to answer phone calls since.
However, Adhadhu understands that the police had not been able to find any evidence of a financial coup.
"There is no evidence of any coordinated attempt. Several hundred bot accounts called people to take to the streets at the time of the [MDP] press conference and the bank's announcement. So far, this looks like a coincidence," said a source familiar with the matter.
The most recent update from the police showed that they gathered relevant documents for the investigation.
Former Police Commissioner Ali Shujau told Adhadhu in November that they were preparing to analyze the documents and decide on pursuing a criminal investigation.
"Whether it is a reasonable allegation or not will be determined by gathering information. We have obtained the necessary documents from the relevant authorities. We are trying to decide after analyzing the documents. The findings will determine whether a criminal investigation can be conducted," he said.
Police have not given any more updates in the months that followed. They have repeatedly told journalists that information will be provided after checking, but have refused to respond.
