President Mohamed Muizzu and his wife Sajidha Mohamed have left for Haa Alif Utheemu after the National Day flag-hoisting ceremony.
The ceremony took place at Republic Square at 6 am on Sunday. Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef and senior government officials attended the event.
Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon and Heritage Minister Adam Naseer Ibrahim welcomed Muizzu and Sajidha at the ceremony.
In addition to the flag-hoisting, a special prayer was also recited to mark the significance of the occasion.
The ceremony concluded with the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) military band performing the national anthem.
In the visit to Utheemu, Muizzu and Sajidha will attend the official reception for National Day and lay the foundation stone of the Bodu Thakurufaanu Gate.
National Day, observed annually on the first of Rabi’ al-Awwal, commemorates the efforts of Sultan Ghaazee Muhammad Thakurufaanu in liberating the Maldives from Portuguese rule.
