A social media activist has been arrested in Addu city on charges of encouraging riots.
Police said 29-year-old Anim Mufeed, who belongs to Addu, was arrested with a court warrant.
Police accuse him of making a post on social media X, encouraging protesters to riot over the proposed Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation bill.
"If you want things to improve, throw a petrol bottle. Put up fires and make it difficult for the traffic. Then, they will be forced to listen," his post read.
Anim is a prominent social media user who is critical of government policies.
