Tamil Nadu, India: Maldives National Surfing Team Secures two Additional slots for 2026 Asian Games.
Maldives Surfing Association (MSA) has confirmed the addition of two more qualified slots, one male and one female, for the upcoming ASF Asian Surfing Championship, which serves as a qualifier for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026, as surfing makes debut in Asia's biggest sports event.
With this achievement, the Maldives will now have a total of four spots at the Asian Games, two for men and two for women, marking a significant step forward for the nation’s competitive surfing scene.
Maldives initially secured two Asian Games slots through last year’s Asian Surfing Championship, hosted in K. Thulusdhoo.
The latest qualification came through MSA’s performance at the recently concluded Asian Surfing Championship in Tamil Nadu, India.
In this years Asian Championshiip, Two Maldivian junior surfers (Yasin and Yoosuf Kayan) advanced to the quarterfinals of the Under-18 category, while senior athletes reached Round 3 and the women’s competitors exited in Round 2.
In the team event’s Aloha category, the Maldives took part in the semifinal heats.
The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 will provide Maldivian surfers with a prestigious stage to compete against Asia’s best, further boosting the sport’s growth and visibility across the country.
