Sri Lanka has decided to issue one-year visas to Maldivians traveling to the country for medical treatment.

Speaking after official talks with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, President Mohamed Muizzu thanked Sri Lanka.

“I want to thank the Sri Lankan government for its recent decision to grant one-year visas to Maldivians who are married to Sri Lankans and to Maldivians who go there for medical treatment,” Muizzu said.

He added talks were held to strengthen relations in defence, trade, education, training, youth and sports, fisheries, agriculture and environment.

Disanayaka is currently on a two-day state visit to the Maldives. This is his first state visit to the Maldives since assuming office in September 2024.

The Maldives established diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka on 26 July 1965 and this year commemorates the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
