Some people have complained that the Bank of Maldives (BML) charged a 30 percent fee on payments to popular shopping sites on June 30.

In an announcement on June 30, the national bank said a 30 percent fee will be imposed on each payment to Temu, Shein, Alibaba, Ali Express, Lazada and eBay starting July 1.

But some people told Adhadhu that their orders placed on June 30 were also subject to the 30 percent fee.

One person said orders placed on the night of June 30 were kept pending and were processed later in the night with the 30 percent fee. This has caused losses of thousands to some people.

"The bank says it's a mistake. They'll return it in a few days. That's because I called and complained. How many people would have been charged for their orders that day without knowing this," a source said.

BML could not be reached for comment. However, some people who placed orders that day called the bank and were told that it was a mistake and that they would refund the money.

The fee has sparked public outrage and many people are raising their voices against the national bank. Some have said their decision is a scam.
