A Canadian company has been awarded the contract for the solar city project announced by the government under the Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
The project was awarded to Abraxas Power at the Business Forum in Singapore. The project management agreement was signed on Tuesday.
Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim signed the agreement on behalf of the government, while Abraxas CEO Colter Eadie signed on behalf of the company.
The solar city will be developed on the lagoon east of Kuda Bandos resort. The project was awarded to the company in April.
Abraxas Power specializes in renewable energy projects. Under the agreement signed on Tuesday, the company will install 100 MW of solar power.
The energy generated under the project will be connected to State Electric Company Limited (STELCO)'s national grid.
The country's expenditure on oil is expected to be significantly reduced with this project. The government hopes to save USD 45 million annually.
According to Abraxas, the project master plan has been completed and the Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is now underway.
