Ibrahim Shameel, an executive committee member of the Maldives Bar Council, has been elected as the Vice President of the council.
Shameel won 291 votes in the Bar Council election held on Thursday. His opponent Maasha Lutfi got 216 votes.
Two new members were also elected to the council's executive committee. Abdullah Nahid won 294 votes while Ahmed Shafiu was elected with 284 votes.
The third candidate, Samahath Abdul Latheef, got 146 votes.
According to the Legal Profession Act, the term of office of the executive committee members of the Bar Council is three years.
The term of four of the current members of the committee expires on July 14. They are Ibrahim Shameel, Ahmed Muizzu, Dheena Hussain and Sadhih Naseer.
The term of the committee's Vice Chairperson Mizna Ahmed will also expire on July 14.
Shameel, who was elected as the Vice President of the Bar Council, represented dismissed Supreme Court Justice Dr. Azmiralda Zahir.
