18 Kilograms of drugs seized from air cargo shipment

The Maldives Customs Service has seized over 18 kilograms of illegal drugs in what authorities describe as one of the largest recent air smuggling attempts.

The drugs, identified as cannabinoids, were discovered hidden in a shipment that arrived in the Maldives via air cargo from Bengaluru, India, during a special operation conducted on June 10.

According to Customs, the total quantity seized amounts to 18.62 kilograms, with an estimated street value of 26 million Rufiyaa. The narcotics were intercepted at the border as part of intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking into the country.

In a post on X, Minister of Homeland Security Ali Ihusan praised the Customs team for their swift action, noting that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has given special directives to tighten border security as part of broader national efforts to eliminate drug abuse.

While the drugs have been seized, it remains unclear if the smuggler was apprehended, or if any arrests have been made in connection with the case. Customs officials confirmed that the importer of the shipment is being identified, and the investigation is ongoing.

The Maldives Police Service has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding their involvement or possible arrests linked to the bust.
