The Prosecutor General's (PG) office has said that people detained in major terrorism cases will not be released after being tagged under the new system.
On Wednesday, two people were released after being tagged under a newly developed electronic monitoring system. In a statement, the PG office said those who are connected to serious terrorism cases will not be released under the system.
"It has not yet been arranged under this system to grant relief for the detention of persons in custody pending trial for child sexual abuse, murder, serious terrorism and drug trafficking cases,” it stated.
But the PG office did not say how serious or major terrorism cases are categorised. However, under the new system, relief is granted after an assessment by the police and corrections.
When questioned, the PG office spokesperson said the cases will be categorised if the suspect has been pressed with the following charges in the context of promoting religious or political or extremist ideology.
1. Serious injury to a person's body
2. Endangering the life of anyone other than the offender
3. Forcibly abducting or holding a person hostage
4. Serious damage to property
5. Hijacking of a passenger or cargo vehicle
6. Causing a serious threat to the health or safety of the public or a section of the public
Some of the major terrorism cases with suspects in custody are the planned bomb attack on Thaa Thimarafushi school, the assassination attempt on former President Mohamed Nasheed and the planned bomb attack on Jumhooree Party (JP) campaign hall in Male'.
