Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has expressed concern over the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s efforts to provide information to other countries and international organizations about the situation in the Maldives.
Speaking at a gathering of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) on Wednesday night, Saeed said that MDP travels overseas a lot and speaks about the country whenever they are not in power.
"If [MDP] steps down, they will do two things. One is to take to the streets and create chaos. The other thing is, they will leave the country very quickly. They will talk in different places and post photos on social media. They will say these people are going to take action and create fear in the people's hearts," he said.
Saeed also said the MDP was providing information about the country's financial situation. Foreign banks are among the institutions the MDP is talking to, he said.
“Since President Dr. Muizzu took over the government, the MDP has been sending messages to the world in many ways, to the world's banks and countries in various ways, saying that the Maldives will go bankrupt,” he said.
His comments came as MDP President Abdulla Shahid travelled to Europe. On Wednesday, he met officials from the European Union (EU) and spoke about the country's situation, including the influence on the judiciary.
During his visit, Shahid met the Commonwealth Secretary General and also held a series of meetings with political parties in the UK.
