Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim Kudu has requested to question Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusaan in parliament over the increased accidents on the Sinamale' bridge connecting Male' with Hulhule' and Hulhumale'.
The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP wants to clarify whether there was a system in place to reduce accidents.
He also wants to clarify the efforts being made to prevent accidents and whether there was a system in place to identify speeding drivers.
Accidents are the second biggest cause of death among young people in the Maldives. Statistics show that from 2008 to September 2024, 115 people died in accidents in the country.
About 1,103 accidents have been reported to the police so far this year. Studies show that speeding is the main reason for accidents in the Maldives.
The "National Road Safety Action Plan 2019-2023" was released with the help of the World Health Organization (WHO) to address the problem of accidents.
