The Thalassemia Center developed by the military at the Orange Hiya in Hulhumale' has been opened today.
The Thalassemia Center was developed at the Orange Hiya as a national project after Thalassemia patients protested in March.
They complained about space constraints and poor quality of the former center. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu ordered the development of the new center.
Thalassemia patients and their families also demanded the resignation of senior officials at the Maldives Blood Services (MBS).
The issue escalated after a large number of blood bags were thrown away due to low-quality filters used in the process of collecting blood from donors.
"I was unaware that no progress has been made till now," Muizzu said after visiting the Thalassemia Center, which is operated under the Health Ministry.
The government said a bus stop and free transportation from Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) will facilitate patients at Orange Hiya.
