President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has held discussions with advocates representing individuals held in prolonged pre-trial detention.
At the meeting held at the President's Office on Wednesday, advocates for the detainees presented their views on how to find a solution to the problem.
They suggested:
- Individuals in prolonged detention could be given a second chance through monitored release mechanisms, such as electronic tagging or other supervised arrangements
- Strengthen the judiciary’s administrative and infrastructural capacity to expedite case processing
- Address detention conditions that undermine human dignity
- Upholding Islamic principles of compassion, justice, and the rejection of cruelty
Muizzu said he would take steps to address their concerns. He said the introduction of a comprehensive and structured bail system is a key government policy.
He promised to meet with the Prosecutor General (PG) and the Attorney General (AG) to assess any operational barriers to implementing monitored release options such as tagging.
Muizzu also noted that a new court complex is currently in development, with interim measures under consideration to accelerate hearings. He further assured the group that prison conditions would be reviewed.
