The Islamic Ministry has suspended the Imam and his replacement for failing to initiate Eid prayers at the Hulhumale' Azeeza Mosque on Sunday.
Islamic Minister Mohamed Shaheem told the media that action had been taken against two people appointed as the Imams of the Eid prayers at Azeeza Mosque.
“The person appointed as the Imam and his replacement did not attend the mosque today [Sunday] and have been suspended from giving sermons in all islands for five years," he said.
The ministry has also initiated a separate investigation into the replacement, as he is the main Imam of Azeeza Mosque. He has now been suspended from the post.
According to social media posts, a foreigner led the Eid prayers in Azeeza Mosque when the Imam and his replacement failed to attend.
