Fenaka Corporation was handed over 40 projects on Thursday after the government took over projects worth billions of Rufiyaa last year because the company is not appropriate to carry out projects in the islands.

On Thursday, the Homeland Security Ministry awarded projects to build 75 police stations to three companies. Fenaka was tasked with building police stations in 40 islands while Road Development Corporation (RDC) was tasked with building police stations in 20 islands and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) was tasked with building police stations in 15 islands.

The projects were awarded to the three government companies without opening bids. The Public Finance Rules were recently amended to allow the Cabinet to award projects without bidding.

In November last year, the government stopped 19 Fenaka projects worth around MVR 1 billion and handed them over to Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC). Most of them were related to water and sewerage services.

At the time, Construction Minister Abdullah Muthalib said the projects were stopped because Fenaka was not a contractor.

Additionally, 14 ice plants operated by Fenaka were also handed over to Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) in February.

Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam told the parliament that Fenaka is an electricity service provider and the company does not have the capacity to operate ice plants.
