President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to hand over the operations of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) to its parliamentary group leader, Ibrahim Falaah.
This decision violates the party's constitution and comes after PNC Chairman and Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla was isolated from party activities.
Multiple sources told Adhadhu that Muizzu, the President of PNC, verbally directed Inguraidgoo MP Falaah to take over the party a few weeks ago.
Falaah refused to comment and ignored messages sent by Adhadhu journalists.
According to the PNC constitution, the Chairman is responsible for party operations, and the President does not have the authority to remove the Chairman and hand over operations to another person.
The PNC Chairman can be removed only by the members' assembly. However, the members' assembly has not decided to dismiss Abdul Raheem or take any action against him.
Running a political party in violation of the party's constitution is against the Political Parties Act.
The growing political tensions between Muizzu and Abdul Raheem exploded on January 28 when Abdul Raheem's son Ibrahim Faisal was sacked as Tourism Minister.
