Yazmeed Mohamed has been appointed as the President's member on the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) in replacement of lawyer Mohamed Sameer.
Sameer was appointed to the JSC on November 23, 2023, after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office.
According to the President's Office, Sameer has been replaced by Yazmeen who received the appointment letters today.
Yazmeen was a candidate of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) in last year's parliamentary elections. He contested for a seat in his home island Gaaf Alif Villingili.
Yazmeed is an accountant who has worked in the Audit Office as an Audit Manager for 12 years. He also served as a member of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) during the government of former President Abdulla Yameen.
The JSC is an institution that has the power to appoint, dismiss and promote judges. The composition of the commission is specified in the constitution.
The JSC is comprised of the Speaker of Parliament, an MP chosen by parliament, a member of the public chosen by parliament, a Supreme Court Justice, a High Court judge, a judge from the lower courts, the president of the Civil Service Commission and a lawyer who represents the legal profession.
Other members include the Attorney General and the President's appointee.
