An Islam teacher accused of sexually assaulting a girl has been suspended more than a month after a complaint was reported against him.
Sources familiar with the matter confirmed to Adhadhu that the accused teacher was suspended on Monday afternoon.
Police had sent his case to the Prosecutor General's (PG) Office. However, a source told Adhadhy that the PG office has not yet decided on pressing charges.
The case was reported to the police in mid-January and they brought the matter to the attention of the Ministry of Education.
The teacher from a school in Male' region is a relative of the 11-year-old girl.
Her family believes the delay in taking action against the teacher is because of close ties with some government officials.
