The Bank of Maldives (BML) has opened a dollar ATM in Addu, the second most populous city in Maldives.

BML CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef, Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, Mayor Ismail Nizar and MPs attended the opening ceremony.

The government has launched a special project with BML and Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) to provide ATM services in all inhabited islands. Under the project, BML will install a total of 103 ATMs this year.

Speaking at the ceremony, Shareef said Addu has always been an important region for BML and the opening of the dollar ATM helps the bank to improve its services in the city.

"With this service, USD transactions can be made outside the official working hours of the bank. This will bring additional convenience to the general public and businessmen," he stated.

BML currently has 150 ATMs in 90 islands. The ATMs are used by customers 15 million times a year.

According to the national bank, the number of BML ATMs will increase to more than 250 when the ATM installation project ends.
