An employee of Police Cooperative Society (Polco) has sent a letter to the People's Majlis expressing concern over widespread corruption within the organization.
Earlier, an audit report flagged suspicious transactions in the Blues Housing Project and it was later revealed that key documents had gone missing.
Chairperson of a sub-committee within the Public Accounts Committee, Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim said they had received a whisleblowing letter.
"That it's not just this housing project. There have been acts of corruption in Polco. Much more broadly, this is corruption within Polco in the procurement of goods and services," he said.
Nazim said the report cited by the whistleblower was sent to former Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed in 2019. However, Hameed does not appear to have taken any action on the report, he said.
The rest of the committee discussion was held with the microphones disconnected, so the details of the meeting are unclear.
The audit also found that the Polco flats were built at a cost of more than MVR 1 billion, which benefited the contractors by exceeding the market prices.
Contractors also owe huge amounts of money to Polco, but the report shows that Polco has not worked to recover the money.
