The Elections Commission (EC) has changed its rules to register political party members through an online portal using the national digital identity service eFaas.
This comes amid a surge in submitting fake forms using stolen personal data to increase political party members.
According to the new rules published in the government gazette, membership forms for political parties will be accepted through the Simedha portal.
It also requires the EC to open for complaints before registering a person to a political party when a membership form is submitted.
Parties are mandated to retain online applications for a period of 10 years.
Hundreds of people were registered to the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) without their knowledge by using forged fingerprints and signatures on forms.
Senior PNC officials admitted that fake forms had been submitted to boost the party's membership to achieve a target of 100,000 members.
The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Democrats have filed complaints with the police and the EC.
MDP has also submitted a motion of no-confidence against Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusaan after leaked images showed him inside the Department of National Registration (DNR) office while officials filled out PNC membership forms.
