The Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) has threatened to leave the government coalition if President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu violates the agreement reached during the 2023 presidential election.
MDA, led by Meedhoo MP and tourism tycoon Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, endorsed Muizzu for the second round of the election. According to the party, Muizzu received the endorsement after signing an agreement.
In a post on X, MDA Vice President Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abbas said Siyam and Muizzu signed an agreement during the election and called on Muizzu to respect it.
"I would like to say that the MDA might have to leave the government coalition if the agreement signed on that day with God as a witness is not implemented and the assistance from the dear leader of MDA is forgotten," he wrote.
The government has given political jobs to many people belonging to the MDA. The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) also decided to leave the Meedhoo seat for MDA in the parliamentary elections.
Despite a PNC candidate running for Velidhoo seat, PNC and Muizzu supported MDA candidate Abbas. Muizzu did not visit the constituency to campaign for the PNC candidate.
However, Siyam’s relationship with Muizzu deteriorated and senior MDA officials in the government, including Abbas’ son, were sacked on September 26, 2024. Many of them were later rehired, but relations have not improved.
The government decided to sack political employees after Siyam made the decision to run for President in 2028. Adhadhu reported about his decision on September 19, 2024.
