President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reopened the Hoarafushi Halfway House, which his administration shut down, less than a year ago.
The Halfway House was reopened during Muizzu's ongoing trip to Haa Alif atoll. The Halfway House was built by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
The project initiated during the former administration cost MVR 6.15 million and was completed in January 2024. Employees were hired at the Halfway House after an announcement in April 2024.
However, the government shut down the Halfway House in May 2024 after saying there was no need for the facility. A letter, signed by Home Ministry's Director General Ahmed Shareef Nafees, said the building would be converted into a juvenile residential centre.
Hoarafushi Halfway House was the first such centre outside the Male' region. The centre was built to run programs to prepare minors who have spent time in a juvenile correctional facility.
