A boat carrying Ramadan gifts for the people of Gaaf Alif Nilandhoo and Dhevvadhoo islands has run aground a reef.
"Leo Wing" boat from Leo Trading was carrying more than 1,070 gunny bags with staple food items as gifts from the company's Managing Director Abdulla Sawad.
Sawad's home island is Nilandhoo. The island's council shared a video with the media which shows most of the gunny bags drifted down to the sea.
The boat ran aground the reef near Gaaf Alif Ekefaru island. The details of the damage to the boat are yet to be determined.
The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has not yet commented on the incident.
Leo Trading's Manager for Gaaf Alif atoll told Adhadhu that they were working to free the boat and recover the goods.
The gunny bags with staple food items are an annual donation from Sawad to the residents of Nilandhoo ahead of Ramadan.
