The government has started a study of the historical site found under the old Friday mosque in Kaafu Kaashidhoo island.
The site was discovered in 2020 while doing renovations on the Friday mosque. The mosque was built on top of the site.
The study is being conducted by the Heritage Ministry, University of East Anglia, Maritime East Asia Heritage and the Dhivehi Language Academy.
Photos show a large structure under the mosque. The mosque is made of coral stone and the structure covers most of the mosque.
The research team is currently excavating the site and conducting some analyses. The structure is likely to be a mosque or a Buddhist temple.
One of the biggest historical sites in the Maldives is also located in Kaashidhoo. The Kuruhinna Tharaagandu is believed to be used by Buddhists in the Maldives.
