A teacher who allegedly assaulted a disabled student at a school in Male' has been freed when summoned to court for a remand hearing.
In a message sent to the media, police said the suspected teacher was arrested on Friday. But police said the teacher was granted a conditional release by the court.
"A suspect was arrested on January 17, 2025, under a court order in connection with the case. The suspect was granted a conditional release by the court at the remand hearing," police stated.
Police said the investigation was ongoing with relevant agencies despite the teacher's release.
The teacher allegedly assaulted a disabled student on Thursday.
Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu told Adhadhu that the matter was reported to the police because of the circumstances.
"The case was reported through the ministry. I am very glad that the school promptly complained to us instead of hiding this case. I looked into the case and found that a student had been physically assaulted so we reported it to the police," he said.
Shafeeu did not specify which school the student was from as the case involved a minor. However, he said the student was in primary grade.
