Former Madaveli MP Hussain Firushan has been elected as the interim President of The Democrats.
At the party's national assembly held on Monday night, The Democrats' Vice President Aishath Alaika Adnan contested against Firushan for the post.
The party's national assembly has 130 members, but only 44 members attended Monday night's session.
Twenty-nine members voted to elect Firushan as the interim President while Alaika got 14 votes.
The post became vacant after former President Hassan Latheef resigned and rejoined the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Meanwhile, the post of Vice President became vacant after Mohamed Shifaz also decided to quit The Democrats and join MDP.
At Monday night's national assembly session, The Democrats voted to elect the new permanent President and Vice President within the next 40 days.
